Local World's flagship evening regional newspapers suffer big circulation falls

Leicester Mercury down 14.4% on the year while rival titles belonging to Johnston Press and Trinity Mirror also suffer

Several Local World flagship evening regional newspapers suffered double digit year-on-year circulation falls, according to the latest ABC figures.

Many of its regional rivals also suffered steep falls in the second half of 2013.

Local World's Leicester Mercury was down 14.4% on the year and 10.4% on the period, reporting an average circulation of 36,004, according to Audit Bureau of Circulations figures published on Wednesday

Sister Local World title the Nottingham Post was down 13.4% on the year and 7% in the past six months to 25,180 while the Derby Telegraph was 10.9% on the year and 6.8% on the period to 25,180.

Local World was formed in January 2013 from the merger of more than 100 titles belonging to Northcliffe Media and Iliffe News & Media.

Local World's best performing daily title continues to be the Stoke-on-Trent Sentinel, which reported a circulation of 39,137, down 10.7% on the year and down 6.6% on the period.

Local World was not the only regional newspaper publisher to struggle.

Johnston Press's Yorkshire Evening Post was down 16.5% on the year and 10% on the period to 26,038.

Unlike rival publishers who release their daily figures every six months, Trinity Mirror publishes the figures for its dailies every month, a move it instigated six months ago.

In December 2013, Trinity Mirror's Manchester Evening News reported an average circulation for the month of 69,347, which was down 3.2% on the period but because of the changes in its publishing frequency there was no year-on-year comparison.

Stablemate the Liverpool Echo was the biggest circulation newspaper in the Trinity Mirror portfolio with a December average circulation of 70,133, down 4.1% on the period.

The Birmingham Mail was down 6.5% on the period to 38,491.
